US Youth Soccer Fall 2016 Mandates

Here is the official press release from the U.S. Soccer regarding the changes to the U.S. Youth Soccer program. The mandate is split into two main categories: 1. Birth Year Registration and 2. Small-Sided Game Standards

Birth Year Registration

U.S. Youth Soccer will move away from "school year" registration August 1st through July 31st to a "Birth Year" registration January 1st through December 31st. This will align with international standards as well as the Youth National Team programs. See below for some helpful links.

U11 and up will switch to the Birth Year Registration starting this fall 2016. The Central Iowa Soccer League (CISL) has decided to follow the mandates as well so U10 and below will also follow Birth Year Registration starting this fall 2016.

Small Sided Standards

Not every club/league in the U.S. plays small sided games at the youth level. The changes for our club and league include playing numbers, roster sizes, field sizes, goal sizes, game lengths, and rules. See below for some helpful links.

Here are some highlights for each age group.

   * U6 will add another player and play 4v4, and a roster size of 6.

   * U8 will move to 4x8 minute quarters, a roster size of 6 and a smaller goal 4'-0" x 6'-0".

   * U10 will add another player and play 7v7, add the offside rule, and a build-out line.

   * U12 will add another player and play 9v9 and increase the roster size to 16.

   * U13 and Up will stay at 11v11 and have a roster size of 18-22 players.

Birth Year Registration Chart -- here is how to read the chart. The season's will still stay the same fall to spring. The first column will be for this fall (2016) and next spring (2017). Then you find your child's birth year. This will determine their soccer age. Here is an example: my daughter was born in 2009. This next season (Fall 2016 and Spring 2017) she will play on a U8 team.

"Build Out Lines" will be placed on the U9/U10 fields to promote playing the ball out of the back in an unpressured setting. Click Here (pages 15 thru 17). Here is a great article that talks about playing a possession style game where the goalie throws the ball to someones feet instead of punting the ball every time.
